Myth Busting: You Should BAN Carbs to Lose Fat

The idea that you should ban carbs to lose fat has been around for ages and not only is it incredibly inefficient, it can also have negative effects on your health and physique.

Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy and are necessary for many bodily processes. They provide nutrients for good bacteria in our intestines and help protect your muscles. Banning carbs would mean that your body cannot perform optimally and can leave you feeling tired, lethargic and unmotivated.

Did you know that carbs actually help you lose weight? Carbs high in resistant starch can help speed up your metabolism by releasing fatty acids. Carbs are also super efficient on blasting belly fat because they increase the activity of fat-burning enzymes and decreased the activity of fat-storing enzymes. Carbs help you feel fuller for longer as well, minimising hunger and cravings.

You should not be afraid to eat carbs, but of course make sure your portion sizes are correct. You should aim to fill one third of your plate with fruit and vegetables, one third with starchy carbs a sixth with proteins and a sixth with dairy.

Picking carbs that provide slow-burning energy, like oats, sweet potatoes and quinoa can be an even healthier move and will make you feel fuller for longer.
