We live in the INFORMATION AGE.
All of the information that we need to achieve all of our life goals and dreams is at our fingertips.
The world wide web has gifted us this information.
So WHY is obesity worse now than it’s ever been?
Why do so many ‘successful’ (in business) guys struggle to get into shape?
Here’s my take:
There’s Way Too Much Choice:
First of all there’s too much information. It gets confusing. This applies to everything by the way.
My wife Alex asked me to pop down the shops the other day to pick up some shampoo for her. Pretty straightforward right? There must have been over 50 different options in Tesco to choose from.
I went into paralysis.
What if I didn’t get the right one?
Does she have shampoo and conditioner in one or separate?
Should I get one that is suited for blonde? (is that meant for natural blonde or dyed blonde?)
I tried calling but there was no reception deep in the shampoo section.
If there had just been a 1-3 different options, this would have been easy.
It’s the same when trying to find that ideal ‘ditch the beer gut’ formula. Men’s Health are saying you can get visible abs in 30 days, Hugh Jackman is swearing by 5000 calories of ostrich meat each day with twice body weight deadlifts and everyone at crossfit is swearing by the paleo diet.
Where do you start?
What do you do?
You do exactly what I did in the supermarket – go into paralysis and do nothing. Before you know it you’re another year older and buying larger jeans.
No Accountability:
Let’s say you’ve made it past step 1.
You join a gym. That seems like a good idea. They have extended opening hours so you should be able to find time to get there.
First few weeks are pretty good. You get along 2-3 times per week.
But then after 3 weeks realise that nothing has really changed.
Work gets busy one week and you lose a bit of momentum.
Within 6 weeks you’re lucky if you get along once per week.
Within 12 weeks, it’s just another direct debit going out each month, but you know deep down that you should get back there so you keep it going.
If no one is holding you accountable for working out then it’s easy to find a reason not to go.
Personal Trainers Don’t Get You
Let’s say you do go one step further and get the accountability part covered off. You hire a PT at the gym. Here’s what they prescribe:
- You are advised to start eating chicken and broccoli for lunches and dinners.
- Get 8 hours sleep.
- Get x3 60 minute workouts in each week and then go for a run on 2 other days.
If you’re busy trying to grow your business or are moving up the career ladder (with wife, kids etc at home demanding more and more of your time) then it won’t take long before you fall out with your PT.
So what’s the solution?
My recommendation to you is that you hire someone that isn’t just a Personal Trainer but is someone that is like you. Similar goals. Similar position regarding family. Someone that has been through the challenges that you are facing.
You need to find someone that WILL hold you accountable.
You need to find someone that can prescribe short, time efficient workouts that can be done from home.
Someone that is not going to dazzle you with science and anatomy but just tell you what you have to do in order to get your desired result.
Typically results are not just about losing weight either. It can be anything from having more energy and focus throughout the day. Having the purpose and passion to enjoy time with your wife and kids.
Having the confidence to commit to health related goals and in turn feeling confident about walking around the pool while on holiday with no top on.
Like I said above. You don’t need more information. You don’t need to buy another book or read another copy of Men’s Health.
You just need to work with the right person that is going to help you to finally achieve your desired outcome.
I also made this decision when it came to my own business.
Personally I will now only work with high achieving men. I no longer train women myself ( I still own a gym where other trainers do this).
I don’t train younger lads in their early 20’s.
I don’t train guys that are already in great shape.
I basically train guys that are in a similar position to where I was.
Guys that I can connect with.
Guys that don’t have much time on their hands – due to work, wife, kids etc.
I am selective, but by being selective it enables me to really enjoy what I do and get amazing transformations for my clients.
