The First Time Always Hurts

I’m obviously talking about exercise!

Yet it’s not the pain of exercise or the delayed soreness you get the following 48 hours that puts guys off getting started.

It’s the perceived effort required.

Not just the effort required to exercise though – it’s everything else.

It’s the effort required to buy new gym gear.

It’s the effort required to actually join a gym.

It’s then the effort required to drive there and get changed.

This is all before you’ve even broken sweat.

Then the effort required to learn the exercises that you need to do.

Subsequent effort to start tracking stats.

Then starting to eat healthy -where do you start with this when there is so much conflicting info out there?

As you’re working out in those first few sessions, you’re then reminded about how unfit you actually are –

“I can’t believe I let myself get like this”…you keep saying to yourself as you’re trying to run faster than 20 minutes on the treadmill without having to resort to walking!

That 45 minute workout soon goes.

Then you need to have a shower, get changed and get back home to do the ‘family thing’ with wife and kids.

Before you know it,48 hours have passed and you have to muster up the effort to go through the whole process all over again!!!!

Perception is everything.

How To Actually Achieve What You Set Out To

Here’s another way of describing the start of the exercise / fitness journey:

You’ve let it go on too long. You’re unfit. You cannot keep up with your kids running around. You feel out of breath just running up the stairs.

You keep kidding yourself that you don’t need any more jeans. You just pop it on to the next hole of your belt.

At the back of your mind you know that you need to get fit. You’re not in your 20’s anymore (they were good years when you could genuinely take your fitness for granted!).

So, you set out to sort this out.

You set a timeframe with a specific goal. – 6 weeks works really well.

“I will lose at least 3 inches from my waist and 1 stone of weight by ‘x’ date (6 weeks later)”

You then write down at least 10 very personal reasons as to WHY this is so important to you to achieve. Things like ‘feel young and sexy again’, or ‘so my wife finds me more attractive’ or ‘ to inspire my kids’…..whatever fits for you.

You then write down how you will reward yourself 6 weeks later when you achieve your goal. – new item of clothing or tickets to watch a football match work for me.

Then you focus on the goal every single day. You remind yourself every morning and every evening of your goal and the reasons WHY you’re doing this.

You eat healthy, cut out sugar and wheat from your diet.

You then exercise 3-4 times per week with high intensity interval type training. This type of training doesn’t need to be any more than 20-30 minute sessions. You can even do them from home.

Focus on that goal and reasons why every day.

Track your progress.

Before you know it, the 6 weeks have passed and you’re 14lbs lighter.

Does this really work?

Absolutely.

Why does it work?

Because when you bring the WHYs to the forefront of your mind and make sure they stay there every single day, you create an unstoppable force that only has one outcome.

Plus, over 6 weeks new habits will have been created.

Energy increased.

Focus and productivity at work will have increased.

and you’ll be walking around with a spring in your step getting ready for the next challenge.

Try it.

Ricky

    Hi Ricky

Your book couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I’m getting married on 2nd January and had my stag do on Saturday. Had a blast but various pics of me in the nightclub with my shirt off wearing a Rambo ammunition belt shocked me into realising I had let myself go. Yes, it looked at shameful and camp as it sounds. Haha.

Until the age of 35 I was pretty skinny and always wanted to have a bit more bulk. Then started putting on more weight and ignored the increase as I finally felt confident wearing T-shirts etc. It’s gone too far the other way now.

I’ve started playing squash and swimming twice a week and a good mate who is really into body-building has offered to help me out in the gym. However, I need to learn how to keep my motivation and not lose momentum.

Any chance of a free copy my friend. You could be a lifesaver.

    Cheers

    Paul

Always good to hear it from those who have done it. Find it hard to maintain the motivation while not seeing results over the first weeks. I would love a copy to see if I can loose the weight before the end of January when the gym is full of the ‘new year resolutioners’!

Sounds like just the thing for me, I’ve been getting back to “the gym” for what seems like for ever and it’s getting me down. I’m recovering from big leg injury and although I’m doing physio the rest is hard to get into the mind set I was really doing well but have let the goals slip and there fore the motivation too. Look forward to having a ready and getting back on track.
